Lost 8th Continent of Earth-ZEALANDIA submerged underwater mapped in detail

Kolkata,WB,27/06/2020:--

Earth is known to have seven continents sprawled across the planet at present. A team of scientists, however, might disagree with this.

Reason - they have discovered a previously unknown land mass - submerged around 3,500 feet under the south Pacific, not Atlantis but Zealandia.

Zealandia's total area has been mapped to be nearly 2 million square miles (5 million square kilometers). At this measure, Zealandia is about half the size of Australia, however, only 6% of the continent is above sea level. The part above water forms the foundation of New Zealand's north and south islands as well as the island of New Caledonia. The rest of Zealandia is underwater and thus had to be mapped for its ocean floor too, hence a bathymetric map.

A startling revelation of the bathymetric map is the continent's steep mountains and ridges rising towards the surface of the water. In addition to mountains and ridges, the map shows coastlines, territorial limits, and major undersea features.

Another map made by the scientists shows the types of crust on the underwater continent. The map indicates the age of the crust as well as its major faults. The continental crust or the thicker crust that forms landmasses has been shown in red, orange, yellow, and brown. The younger, oceanic crust is shown in blue. Red triangles point to volcanoes.

A report by Business Insider says that the new Zelandia continent maps are a part of a global initiative to map the entire ocean floor of planet Earth by 2030.A part of it now, Zealandia was submerged around 30 million to 50 million years after it broke off Gondwana, the singular landmass that broke off to form different continents which we see today.Till 2017, Zealandia was classified as a "microcontinent," much like the island of Madagascar. Mortimer, however, argued that Zealandia checks all the prerequisites for the status of a continent.

The landmass has “clearly defined boundaries, occupies an area greater than 386,000 square miles (1 million square kilometers), is elevated above the surrounding ocean crust, and has a continental crust thicker than that oceanic crust” says Mortimer, as quoted in the report.
